So we got an album, a drink and tons of monkeys getting spanked. Nah, just kidding. I dont have a drink with me. Let us see what this new album of a certain artist that goes by the name Jason Mraz has in store for us. The title itself introduces us to a very original title. Mr A-Z. I kept reading that as Mister Azz, but i think its pronounced Mister A to Z. Yah, the title is catchy (though less catchy then ass) if i say so myself and i just did.
Jason Mraz. An enigma. To describe in him a word is simple: a geek. Yes, he’s a geek, pure and simple. A geek that can wind any woman around his finger. How? Simple. Instead of singing about how gorgeous a girl is, instead he writes and sings about life and how wonderful it is when that girl is in it. He centers it around reasons instead of the superficial. A geek with the power of love and life. Gosh and i hear he’s even popular. In short: he’s a geek we geeks wish we could be. Amen and yah im ranting. Dont forget the disclaimer btw.
To get back on track. Mraz writes songs about love and all the things of life. The song “Life Is Wonderful” is a song about the latter with a hint of love. A simple song about how wonderful life is and though unimpressive at first glance, its a nice song to listen to when you’re high or wasted. Simple, almost laughable lyrics yet interesting ones aswell. Sentences like “It takes no time to fall in love” and “But it takes you years to know what love is” go abit deeper but all in all, i think he wrote this song being happy and intoxicated.
Somehow Mraz reminds me of a sort of a rapper to me. One of his trademarks is how he blurts out a ton of words in a matter of seconds yet it sounds perfect and not fast at all. He’s the kind of guy that writes an overlong sentence yet is able to make it sound like its shorter. God, he must be a godsent for writers that dont want to cut down on words in lyrics. “Wordplay”, is one of those songs. A cannon of words flow into a song with a nice relaxing beat. This song is yet another “happy” song about , well i dunno, wordplay? A gimmick which the song itself is too. I like it for it sounds catchy but its nothing special.
Now, could it be any more obvious that he actually made a self titled song? Yes, “Geek in the Pink”, who else could it be. Imagine Mraz doing the macarena, dressed in a pink dress and singing YMCA. Yes, the geek in the pink, Mraz. Dont worry though, i dont think he’s gay, just feminine. This song is a good one, thats for sure. Its a song about well dunno a girl that treats him badly and about could haves and would haves. Song has really smart and funny sentences like “Who wouldn't care if you com...plete him or not” and “All y'all geek is the new color for fall”. Last one actually made me feel hopeful, coz its almost fall and yah it sucks, but im a geek too :p.
Wow, relaxing, calm and lounging music is all this guy makes isnt it? Yeah, it is and once used to it you can really vibe the moment listening to Mraz MusiC. But sometimes his music flavour makes me go crazy. But “Did You Get My Message” , has all of that. Simple, relaxed , catchy and yeah innocent and pure sentences like “Do you ever wonder what happens to the words that we send”. Guess it’s odd that he would sing that as i would have gotten the hint if someone says; did you get my message to me a thousand times :p.
WAIT. Stop the press. What is it you say? I.........notice this song is different. And wait a minute. I love this song. Might be because it sounds more or less acoustic and is just Mraz singing with, yeah a frickin piano, and i love songs with just piano as an instrument! And the words he sings softly as he plays the piano with full emotion, are wonderful.
Love is blinding when your timing's never right
Not really in the mood to check out each song in full but “Clockwatching” and “Bella Donna” dont appeal to me at all. So hit the next button twice now. Teeheehee.
Another piano song, but sung with a more nagging voice then it should. As if he was having an endless orgasm in between. So that drags down the song a bit. “Plane” is a song about love and having to leave but not wanting to. Using the saddest word one can use in love: “if”. Btw remember the disclaimer!
Abit more active song and rather cool lounge song is “O. Lover”
You are the sweetest thing I've found since whenever,
Think that says it all. And yet it doesnt. Its about wanting and wanting that love from someone thats denying,....
Said if I didn't know,
and if I didn't know,
well if I didn't know that you loved me would you tell me?
Odd song. Thats all. Sing along with the guilt and so called love it pretends to want.
But it won't be the last romance cause when the weekend starts the guilty party's on.
“Please dont tell me”. Nice song, insane lyrics.
Please don't tell her that I miss her
Because I'm crazy like the rest of us
Those words i can relate to haha, so thumbs up for this song :p. Yell along with those words as the chorus and its all good.
“Forecast” and “Song For A Friend” are nice songs to end this album with. I think they rank the highest along with “Mr. Curiosity”. Do i need to say more? Yes? Blah well i wont. This review is taking too much time as it is already and its already too much text.
Verdict: Uneven album with great songs and unappealing songs, but if you give it a go then all the songs will grow on you, especially when you are under influence of something ;). Go MISTA ASS! YOU ROCK!
And if them rains should fall for sure with you I'll be
